Tanning?

I've been debating for awhile about how I should tan before the wedding. I'm usually really against tanning beds for the obvious reasons. But I have this crazy tan line on my back from sitting at Eli's baseball game last summer. I was burned really bad and the tan line is still there (plus a whole batch of freckles).
So I'd like to go to a tanning bed to even it out. I considered just doing the spray on tan, but I did that before going to Mexico and wasn't really impressed. I got some color, but it didn't last and got streaky when I shaved my legs.
I'm wondering how soon I should start this tanning process. I have super pale skin so I will likely burn. Is there a way I can gradually build it up so I won't burn? I thought about waiting until summer and do it naturally, but that never works out. I always get weird tan lines and can't control how much sun I get.
Any thoughts or advice out there?

As a former "Sun of a Beach" tanning consultant, I'd recommend doing it. I know it's a horrible thing, but you're not going to develop a habit (or even cancer) if you do it for one occasion! Just start really, really slowly--like 5 minutes, and build up over the course of a month or two...but it is tricky business right now through the summer, chances are you're going to end up with some tan lines from summer fun & more baseball games!!! I wouldn't even worry about it until September. But then be consistent & it'll even out.
